The Carnivorous Plant FAQ Field Trip Report -

Western Australia in 2007

Return to the Trip Overview

Very sandy soil:
Phill led us to a clearing in the trees where most of the ground vegetation disappeared and only the white sand remained. Here we found this sundew, Drosera porrecta. It looks like an erect sundew but it is actually a fan-leaved species.

"Flabelliform" is a word that means fan-shaped. It's a nice word. Rolls off the tongue well. I challenge you to use it today in casual speech (i.e., not in a conversation about some aspect of natural history).

Example: "My dear, you have the most lovely flabelliform eyelashes, but you know that--don't you."

Then report to me the consequences.
