The Carnivorous Plant FAQ Field Trip Report -

Western Australia in 2007

Return to the Trip Overview

Trigger plants:
Fans of trigger plants will be gratified to hear that they were common, of course. In fact we had seen several species already, but I simply hadn't photographed them. I am no expert on the genus, and I ID'd these as Stylidium calcaratum. However, I had feedback from a number for folks, including Allen Lowrie, indicating that the plants are actually Stylidium petiolare. Notice the two flowers on the left were triggered recently, while the two at lower right are awaiting pollinators.

This is the largest species we saw on our trip. Triggering them delivered a powerful wallop. I'm amazed the pollinating insects put up with this kind of nonsense.
