Sundews:
Here is a closer view of the sundews on the log. There is very little "soil", the plants are just growing in moist spots on the log. I suppose the log is just a porous, moist foothold for the plants. The yellow flowers are Mimulus (monkeyflower).

Notice those cobalt blue objects in the plants? There are a few in the bottom center of the photograph...
