The Carnivorous Plant FAQ Field Trip Report -

Florida Panhandle in 2008

Return to the Trip Overview

Two mysteries:
"Long-leaved" Drosera capillaris occupied our attentions for a while, and sparked a vigorous discussion between Jim and Bob about whether they might be members of a hybrid swarm involving Drosera intermedia.

Next, after a quick stop at a flooded savannah to have a speedy look around, we drove into Sumatra to meet Brian. It was about 10:15 a.m. Brian wasn't there. We waited about twenty minutes. Still no sign of him. I asked the grocery store clerk if Brian had been spotted (he's easy to describe). Nope. We waited another ten minutes. No Brian. There was no cell phone reception, so we decided to visit another site about 10 minutes away.

The real mystery is that when we met Brian later in the day, he said arrived at the grocery store at 10 a.m., and had waited for us for an hour! It was all very Twilight Zone....

(Incidentally, I later retrieved from my cell phone a message from Brian, saying he was about to enter Sumatra...the message was stamped shortly before 10 a.m....)
