The Carnivorous Plant FAQ Field Trip Report -

Florida Panhandle in 2008

Return to the Trip Overview

A surprising housemate!
I moved about in the shin-deep water quietly and cautiously, trying not to disturb the flocculent matter on the muddy bed. This paid off when I discovered that this bubble-decorated plant had a little crayfish hiding among its leaves! I wonder about the extent of its relationship with the plant. Does it derive only cover? Is it a kleptoparasite?

I also wonder if the Pinguicula planifolia leaves are carnivorous when submerged. I rubbed the leaves, they were still slimy and slick, even under water.

Here is another plant partially covered with detritus, and this one is partially emerging from the water.
