The Carnivorous Plant FAQ Field Trip Report -

Massachusetts and Vermont in 2006

Return to the Trip Overview

Big plants!
Back in the canoe, we found gigantic Utricularia macrorhiza floating in the water. These plants were a few meters long and had enormous turions 3 or more cm long. Wow!

Although the plants were so long and in good condition, bladders were absent except for a few near the growing tips of each plant. Usually, even late in the season, bladders are visible along the entire shoot. I wonder if this is a consequence of living in waters rich in Calcium and Magnesium?

I love how the green turions are nestled in heavy brown foliage. It reminds me of the faces of Russian royalty, peering from the furs of heavy winter coats.

I was so impressed by these turions, I took a few more photographs of the largest in portrait orientation and landscape orientation.

Enjoy, turion fanatics, enjoy!
