The Carnivorous Plant FAQ Field Trip Report -

Appalachian Excursion in 2005!

Return to the Trip Overview

Woodland hike:
Halfway through my multiday meeting, our entourage took a half-day field trip up a moist, botanically rich hillside. The spring wildflowers were fantastic!

This is Arisaema triphyllum, commonly called a jack-in-the-pulpit. The funnel-like flower looks suspiciously carnivorous, and each spring I receive many e-mails from folks who think they've found a carnivorous plant when it turns out they've found this plant instead. Still, this thing is neat, don't you think?

It is quite attractive in fruit, too.
