The Carnivorous Plant FAQ Field Trip Report -

Appalachian Excursion in 2005!

Return to the Trip Overview

Red sundews:
Wow. These intensely red sundews, growing among lichens, mosses, and on quartz, are just beautiful. On my previous trip I had found sundews which I identified as Drosera intermedia by looking at the leaf stipules. The stipules on these plants indicated they were Drosera capillaris. Interesting...so both species occur here. It is also interesting that on each trip I was only able to find one species. I wish I had a voucher specimen or herbarium sheet from each trip to compare observations, but of course I didn't collect on either trip. Whatever--the plants are all still there and are protected.
