When Sphagnum Calls--You Cannot Resist:
Since it was autumn,
all the native sundews (Drosera) were already
in hibernacula and essentially invisible. (This was a little bit of
a drag, since I have not yet seen Drosera linearis in the
wild.) However, I knew that the anthocyanin-free form of
Sarracenia purpurea was in the area, so I had a noteworthy and novel
(at least for me) grail for my safari. (How's that for a mixed metaphor?)
I called some friends who knew the relevant parts of Canada,
got directions to sites
(on the usual
conditions of secrecy to protect the sites from poaching
horticulturists), and prepared for the trip. After my meeting was
completed, I loaded my rental car with gear and headed for the bogs.
