More pitchers:
Phil and I also spoke at length about Sarracenia purpurea subsp.
venosa var. montana, which I am viewing less and less as being worthy of varietal designation. Phil has some plants
that came from the "type" location. I have visited this location, and the lid lobes on the plants there have the
pinched-together appearance that is supposedly diagnostic for the plant. It was interesting to see it being maintained with these plants
in cultivation.
However, on trips to see this plant in the wild in 2005 and 2007,
I noticed that
this character does not seem to be consistently exhibited in other so-called Sarracenia purpurea subsp.
venosa var. montana populations. Hence my overall doubt of the name.
