The Trip:
By an interesting coincidence, my travel itinerary for October 2004 included two
trips to New England. (For those unfamiliar with this term, "New England"
refers to the six states east of New York state, i.e. Connecticut, Rhode Island,
Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.) The first trip was to attend the wedding,
the second was for business. Beth (my fabulous trophy wife) and I spent a few days before and after
the nuptials on the first trip, exploring neoanglican sites new to us both. We even took part of a day off
from our natural areas explorations (gasp) at my request
(double gasp) to visit a certain neighborhood in Providence, Rhode Island. It was all quite enjoyable.
Then, a few weeks after this first trip, my second trip brought me back (alone, alas)
to the same area. I padded this trip by a few days so I could look for more
carnivorous plants.
In total, Beth and I ended up seeing carnivorous plants in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and
Vermont. This web essay includes some of the highlights.
I suppose I should notify you, the intolerant reader, that travelling to Rhode Island for the first time ever inevitably
set my mind thinking about a certain semi-obscure author who lived in Providence, Rhode Island. Oblique references to his
work resulted...
