ST Beyond Boots

Star Trek Beyond saw a complete change in the uniforms, to something more structured and formal (and candidly, I welcome the change). The boots also changed from the DKNY Rebels used in the first two movies. (Maybe because the Rebels were no longer in production by this point.) Mind you, you don't really see much of the boots...the best views are during the first few scenes of the movie.

(There's another scene, shortly after, where Kirk holds up a boot, but it's a bit too blurry for details.) As little as the boots are shown, the women's boots are shown even less, to the extent that any fairly plain, tall, black boots would be perfectly fine.

After some digging, I discovered that the boots were made by a high fashion, German firm called Trippen (https://en.trippen.com/). I was led to this by a Facebook posting they published, proudly showing off their boots at a convention display:

The post noted that the boot model was called a "Racer", but after many searches the only additional photo I was able to find of Trippen Racers is this single image of a boot shown in profile, below. You can see the stitching appears to be a correct match.

Incidentally, in the same Facebook posting Trippen mentioned that the women's boots in Beyond were Trippen "Darts," below left. I would have thought that a better match to the Racers would be the Trippen Miami boots, which I show at lower right. (The Darts are obviously not shown with the right surface you would want for Beyond women's boots.) I inquired with Trippen for confirmation on this, and staff there confirmed that the women's boots in Beyond were definitely the Darts. I rewatched Beyond, but there are no good views of her boots.

The Racers are no longer in production, but they can be ordered as one-offs. They are quite pricey, €380. Also, as I write this, shipping to the USA was an additional €25.

Former Anovos employee John Cooley indicated that, when ordering a pair of Racers, the best color/finish selection would be black calf leather, which Trippen refers to as "asp black" in their selection menus.

After a few days of prevaricating, FOMO won out, and I ordered a pair. Of course, none of my credit cards worked (my credit union fraud center nervously declined the charges and then put temporary holds on my card until I chatted with the fraud centers). Meanwhile, PayPal worked just fine.

Build time is supposed to be 4-6 weeks. I purchased the boots on 30 March 2022, and they arrived on 10 May...right in the window of expectation. This was quite wonderful, especially considering that these are custom built! (Maybe I'm just suffering from the after-effects of the days of ordering from Anovos.)

Happily, the boots fit like a dream, once I put in my standard orthotics that I always prefer to use. (My typical US shoe size is Men's 11.5, and I ordered a size 45.

The boots are really quite amusing, with a rim that is raised above the ground level, making it look as if you are floating slightly. Viewed from above, they have a curious paddle outline for the toes, giving you a strangely froglike feel. I love them!

Below, I'm wearing an Anovos premier tunic, plain grey Calvin Klein pants, and Trippen boots. Ready for lens flare, Mr. Abrams!
