SNW Boots

The boots in Strange New Worlds are an interesting tribute to the Cuban style, ultra-narrow boots of the TOS era, but modified for a new presentation of that era of Trek.

During the Mission Chicago 2022 Star Trek convention, these boots were revealed for the first time, and went on sale to convention attendees (on a pre-order basis). Simultaneously, these boots were also made available for purchase online. The purchase window was only 8-10 April! Costing about $400, they were available in men's and women's sizes, and grey/black but with a white option for those looking to replicate the look of Christine Chapel and presumably other medical personnel.

The boot manufacturer is John Fluevog, and the boots are simply be called their "Starfleet Boot." They are part of their Manifold line of footwear.

The SNW costume designer Bernadette Croft notes:
"The stretchy back makes fitting our actors easy and the rubber soles are shock absorbent which is handy on the concrete studio floors. The leather is soft yet durable. We have had countless running and action sequences and the Fluevog boots never fail. "

Meanwhile, the Fluevog site notes:

The boots themselves are, for me, very comfortable, but for many they are too narrow in the toes. Also, many people ordering the boots have opted to go up a size.

Above I'm wearing a tunic and pants by Coser Mart, a black compression undershirt (to give a tiny bit of black collar in the front drop in the V-neck collar) and a division badge by Fansets.

I'm very fond of my Fluevogs, however some folks have complaints about them. Most commonly, the problems with the boots are that the base for the foot is just too narrow. (I note that I hear this complaint most often from men, who are unused to the agonies regularly suffered by women wearing cruel, fashion shoes!) Another problem is that while the foot area may fit, the calfs are just too narrow...kind of assuming that we're all built like Doug Jones or Emily Coutts.

The medical grey version is identical, except the uppers are lighter in color. The underside of the light grey soles, interestingly, is almost identical in shade to the underside of the soles of the black boots, even though they look so different--it's one of those weird optical illusions.

A potential solution would be to have custom boots made for you. Again, the craftspeople at Barismil.com have come up with a solution. Below are a pair of custom boots they made, to emulate the Strange New Worlds boot. There's a lot to like about this solution--most importantly, you can have the boots expertly sized to your feet, customized! Some of the details are not quite correct (such as the angular boot tip, which Barismil rendered with a more typical squared-off shape), but this is much better than an unwearable pair!

As of late 2022, these custom boots cost something more than $450, but you'd have to check with the bootmakers to see what they're charging for them.
